SUMMER STOCK AUSTIN, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TEXAS
PERFORMING ARTS, PRESENTS LIN MANUEL MIRANDA’S
BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL

The 2021 Summer Stock Austin company performs live July 15 - August 1 in
the McCullough Theatre on UT campus

June 28, 2021 (Austin, TX) -- After 15 months of primarily digital theatre, Summer Stock Austin (SSA) combines high school and college students from the Austin area and all around the country to produce Lin Manuel Miranda’s 2002 Bring It On The Musical July 15 - August 1. SSA has partnered with Texas Performing Arts to produce Austin’s most electrifying live event of the year to be presented in the McCullough Theatre on UT Campus.

"I am thrilled to welcome Summer Stock Austin to Texas Performing Arts” stated Bob Bursey, Executive and Artistic Director of Texas Performing Arts. “Presenting musical theater and developing the next generation of stage artists are both central to our mission, so hosting their work is a natural fit. Throughout her career, Ginger Morris has nurtured new Austin talent with unmatched energy. I’m pleased to provide the participants of Summer Stock Austin with space to create, and look forward to seeing the results."

Bitingly relevant, sprinkled with sass, and inspired by the hit film, Bring It On The Musical takes audiences on a high-flying journey filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness. Campbell is cheer-royalty at Truman High School, and her senior year should prove the most cheertastic — she's been named captain of the squad! But, an unexpected redistricting has forced her to spend her final year of high school at the neighboring hard-knock Jackson High School. Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrongand hardworking leader, Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition — the National Championships.

“We are enthusiastic about producing a fully staged musical again after more than a year of digital theatre, hybrid performances, masked theatre, and virtually no audiences. These 50 performers are ready to take the stage with death defying cheer routines, electrifying hip hop choreography, contemporary Miranda-style vocals, and a story full of hope, humor, and heart.”
- Ginger Morris, Summer Stock Austin Artistic Director

The production is helmed by Summer Stock Austin Artistic Director, Ginger Morris along with UT-Austin Assistant Professor of Theatre Education, Michael Avila. Former UT Cheer Captain, Hunter Reigan joins the team as the cheer consultant/choreographer, assisted by Austin performer Khali Sykes. SSA alumni Matt Kennedy (Freddie in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), now a TikTok sensation and hip hop dancer/instructor makes his choreography debut. Bringing the music and voices to life is J. Quinton Johnson of Broadway Hamilton fame.

Yo! I’m telling you - y’all are not ready. This show is ‘bout to be bananas! A Lacamore/Miranda deep cut for sure and I’m so happy to be a part of the team that is bringing it to Austin.
-J. Quinton Johnson, Bring It On Music Director & Performer in Broadway’s Hamilton

ABOUT SUMMER STOCK AUSTIN
Since July 2005, college and high school students from across Texas meet to mount several productions with professionals from Austin and around the country in a one-of-a-kind experience. They work as a traditional “stock” company; each member performs, designs, builds, and assists on various aspects of theatrical productions. Similar programs charge high school students tuition—Summer Stock Austin not only offers the experience to all participants free of charge, but many of the college students receive a stipend and also work as mentors through the process.

The company is led by a host of professionals with experience ranging from Austin to Broadway. Through this work, college students begin making invaluable connections as they embark on their professional careers. High school students will have a similarly unique experience as they gain firsthand knowledge of working in a professional setting. Summer Stock Austin’s philosophy is to create an environment of shared learning by incorporating high school students, college students, and professionals in a fast-paced production series where everyone involved shares in the responsibility of creating high-quality theatre.
