Butler School of Music Composers:
Kevin Charoensri
Maxwell Franko
Josiah Garza
Jingchao (Ginny) Wang

The students will present compositions inspired by two works from Landmarks’collection: Simone Leigh’s Sentinel IV, a ten-foot bronze sculpture sited at the courtyard of the Anna Hiss Gymnasium; and Jennifer Steinkamp’s EON, an immersive digital installation exhibited within Welch Hall, part of the College of Natural Sciences. The compositions will reflect a variety of styles and electroacoustic arrangements, with musicians ranging from an a cappella chorus to string quartet.

The April 21 performance will begin at 7:30 PM at the site of Leigh’s sculpture, located at 2501 Wichita, off of Speedway. Audiences will then walk a short distance to the Steinkamp installation at Welch Hall. Visitors may park at the Speedway Garage, nearest to Anna Hiss Gymnasium, or at any other available UT garage.

Sound in Sculpture is a showcase of original music composed and performed by students from the Butler School of Music inspired by works in the university’s public art collection. Each premiere performance takes place against the backdrop of the site-specific work of art that inspired the piece.

Artwork has been commissioned or presented by Landmarks, the university’s public art program.
