The lights may be off on Broadway this year, but that hasn’t stopped Patti LuPone from taking to the stage in a new virtual format.

Just how did the great Hollywood studios make doorbusting blockbuster movies back before CGI, drones and other modern day techno wizardry? All is revealed in a first-time collaboration between San Antonio’s McNay Art Museum and Texas Performing Arts as they debut six rare hand-painted, sound-stage backdrops from one of Hollywood’s legendary filmmakers, Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) Studios.

Some local arts groups have announced complex plans for a virtual fall season.

This fall, UT students working in TPA’s Scenic Studio will design and build robots for short online performances created in a virtual collaboration with students from at Austin’s Metz and Sanchez Elementary Schools.

Ana Maria Alvarez, the founder of the Los Angeles-based Contra-Tiempo dance company, will be hosting a virtual class for Austin families Aug. 22.

The show, which will feature Jackson performing with a live band at New World Stages in NYC, includes “a little bit of ‘In the Heights,’ a little bit ‘Hamilton’ and what I think is going to be a really beautiful tribute to one of my one of my idols, Harry Belafonte,” he said.

On August 15, Broadway actor Christopher Jackson will virtually serenade arts lovers across the country with a livestream concert event, “Christopher Jackson: Live from the West Side.”
