We’re proud to participate in the Broadway League’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards (after visionary theatrical producer Jimmy Nederlander). The awards are a celebration of outstanding student achievement, recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance and elevating the importance of theatre arts education in schools.
Each year, judges for Austin’s Heller Awards for Young Artists (HAYAs) select two outstanding student performers (one actor and one actress) who become Jimmy Award nominees. These students join top students from other U.S. regional programs to perform on the Broadway stage in New York City. In addition to the awards ceremony, students participate in a ten-day professional training intensive with notable theatre professionals.
The Jimmy Awards are presented by The Broadway League Foundation.
In June 2023, Langston Lee (Rouse High School, Leander ISD) and Kyra Carr (Hendrickson High School, Pflugerville ISD, made their debuts on the Broadway stage in New York City at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmys, thanks to Texas Performing Arts, home of Broadway in Austin. It was a night to remember as Langston took the top honor of Best Performance by an Actor out of more than 90 nominees.
