Multi-Grammy winning Latin superstar and social activist Gilberto Gil returns to Texas Performing Arts with a six-piece backing ensemble for an evening that pays homage to baião music pioneer Luiz Gonzaga, October 30 at Bass Concert Hall.

Gilberto Gil is known for both his musical innovation and political commitment. He is one of the first artists to lead the ‘Tropicalia’ music movement. Gil’s music has modernized Brazilian popular music and his style blends an eclectic range of influences including rock, African, reggae, and Brazilian genres like samba, salsa, and bossa nova.

Gil’s For All tour pays homage to the folkloric and celebratory Baião music of Northeast Brazil, a sound that fuses classic styles of European folk music with indigenous and African sounds. Acclaimed composer, accordionist, and singer Luiz Gonzaga, known as the “King of Baião,” was responsible for taking this music from rural Northeast Brazil to the rest of the country. Driven by the accordion, triangle, and a bass drum, baião forms the soundtrack for the Catholic June Festival and popular dances such as forró. Gil and his band will reinvent old classics and play new songs from the recently released album and live DVD Fé na Festa, all inspired by the baião sound.

Gilberto Gil is presented by Texas Performing Arts’ ArtesAméricas program. In partnership with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, ArtesAméricas promotes cultural dialogue in the Americas through the performing arts. For more information, please visit artesamericas.org.
