Texas Performing Arts presents the Texas premiere of the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Black Watch, February 16-20 at Bass Concert Hall. Black Watch stops in Austin following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, performances around the globe, and unanimous critical and popular acclaim. For this groundbreaking presentation, all seating will be on the Bass Concert Hall stage in a rare and intimate configuration.

Black Watch is a stirring play based on interviews conducted by Scottish playwright Gregory Burke with veteran soldiers who served in Iraq. Viewed through the eyes of those on the ground, Black Watch reveals what it means to be part of the legendary Scottish regiment, what it means to be part of the war on terror — and what it means to make the journey home again.

Hailed as a cultural landmark of the 21st century, John Tiffany’s production makes powerful and inventive use of movement, music, and song, all to create a visceral, complex, and urgent piece of theatre — compounded by the seats being on stage, next to the action.

The production has now played to over 113,000 people across three continents and has garnered 22 awards. Most recently the production won four Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Director, Best Theatre Choreography, Best Play, and Best Sound Design, and the company won its first US award with the New York Drama Circle naming Black Watch Best Foreign Play.

Dr. Christine Leche of Austin Community College teaches Creative Writing and English courses to veterans and their families. At the University of Maryland-Europe, she taught military members in such locations as Germany, Italy, Bosnia, Kosovo, Honduras, and most recently, Afghanistan. She also served as Academic Director in English, Communications, and Foreign Languages.
